Rainbow Routes Advisory Board Member Description

Role: Advisory Board Member, Rainbow Routes
Commitment: Volunteer position, with terms and responsibilities subject to change

Position Overview:

The Rainbow Routes Advisory Board provides strategic guidance, oversight, and support to the Executive Director (ED) and the organization. Since Rainbow Routes will launch through a fiscal sponsor, the Advisory Board differs from a traditional Board of Directors, focusing on mission alignment rather than fiduciary responsibilities. The Board may also collaborate with the fiscal sponsor to ensure compliance and sustainable operations.

Qualifications:

  • Passion for advancing LGBTQ+ inclusion, advocacy, and community-building

  • Significant experience in one or more of the following areas: 

    • Nonprofit management or governance

    • Education, study abroad, or experiential learning

    • Fundraising, grant writing, or philanthropy

    • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

    • Law, accounting, or financial management

    • Marketing, communications, public relations, graphic design, or web design

  • Strategic thinker with strong interpersonal and communication skills for collaboration

  • Willingness to contribute time and expertise, including attending regular virtual board meetings (approximately quarterly) and engaging in ongoing discussions, initiatives, and fundraising efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • Mission Oversight & Strategic Guidance:

    • Ensure programs align with the mission and address community needs

    • Participate in strategic planning and provide input on strategic direction

  • Support & Supervision of the Executive Director:

    • Collaborate with the fiscal sponsor on performance reviews, compensation adjustments, or other HR matters when appropriate

  • Advocacy & Fundraising:

    • Promote Rainbow Routes through personal and professional networks

    • Support fundraising efforts to sustain the organization’s mission

  • Communication with Fiscal Sponsor (when applicable):

    • Maintain open communication with the fiscal sponsor once established

    • Participate in meetings and provide input for compliance and reporting

  • Effective Governance:

    • Attend regular virtual board meetings (approximately quarterly)

    • Help establish communication norms and decision-making processes for the board

Responsibilities may evolve to meet the needs of Rainbow Routes and its fiscal sponsor.
